We are delighted to announce that Charles Scales Jr., MD, Associate Professor of Surgery, Division of Urology, has been appointed as new Director of the Duke Surgical Center for Outcomes Research (SCORES). Dr. Scales received his undergraduate degree in chemistry at Georgia Institute of Technology, followed by a master’s degree at Harvard University and medical degree at Duke University. He completed his residency in urology at Duke University and was awarded a prestigious Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar Award to pursue urologic research with the Rand Corporation at UCLA before returning to Duke as a faculty member in 2013.
Dr. Scales currently serves as Associate Professor of Urology and Population Health, as well as a Member of the Margolis Center for Health Policy. He is a nationally recognized expert in urinary stone disease, and has published widely in this area. In addition, he has made key contributions to evaluating the components of evidence-based health care delivery, which are critical to designing value-based care. He is a well-funded investigator with both federal and industry support and currently serves as the national PI of a large, multi-center collaboration, the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases​ (NIDDK) Urinary Stone Disease Research Network, where his group coordinates the Scientific Data Research Center. Throughout his career, Dr. Scales has been widely recognized for his commitment to the values of diversity, equity, and inclusive leadership.
In his new role, Dr. Scales will oversee and coordinate the extensive data and statistical resources of SCORES, including national administrative datasets, cancer registries, and expert statistical support, which are shared resources available to all SCORES members and collaborators.
