SMSNA Fellowship in Advanced Prosthetic Urology and Male Sexual Health Research

The Duke SMSNA Fellowship offers fellows a rich and diverse array of research opportunities designed to advance the fields of prosthetic urology and sexual medicine. Our core research efforts focus on genitourinary prosthetics, with particular emphasis on preventing and managing infectious and iatrogenic complications, as well as the development of novel surgical techniques in both reconstructive and prosthetic urology.

Fellows have access to the Prosthetics Registry and Outcomes in Urology at Duke (PROUD), a large-scale database that facilitates both retrospective and prospective studies of penile implant patients. In addition, Duke’s membership in the Prosthetic Urology Multi-Institutional Partnership (PUMP) fosters collaboration with leading institutions nationwide, enabling fellows to engage with shared resources and collective expertise.

Beyond these academic resources, fellows have the opportunity to participate in industry-sponsored clinical trials, gaining firsthand experience with cutting-edge technologies and therapeutic innovations. Access to the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) database further supports health services and outcomes research on a national scale.

The fellowship encourages a collaborative research environment, where fellows work closely with residents, research staff, and other subspecialty trainees to foster interdisciplinary scholarship. Fellows are also supported in producing scholarly work, including peer-reviewed publications and surgical videos, which can be presented at national meetings such as the SMSNA and AUA conferences. This comprehensive research infrastructure equips fellows to build a strong academic portfolio and become leaders in the field.
