Duke University Urinary Dysfunction Lab Wins Numerous Awards at Society of Pelvic Research Annual Meeting

The DUUD Laboratory, under the guidance of Todd Purves, MD, PhD, and Monty Hughes, PhD, had another strong showing at the annual meeting in Savannah in December.

  • Armand Allkanjari (Resident) – Top 10 best abstract. “Male Akita Mice Develop Bladder Underactivity Independent of NLRP3 as a Result of a Decrease in Neurotransmitter Release from Efferent Neurons”
  • Michael Odom (Post-doctoral fellow) – Top 10 best abstract. “Testosterone Contributes More to the Development of Diabetic Bladder Dysfunction in Type 1 Diabetic Male Mice Than Hyperglycemia”
  • Shelby Harper (former Duke Medical Student. Currently a resident at Cleveland Clinic) – Top 10 best abstract. “Strict glucose control and elimination of NLRP3-induced inflammation prevents diabetic bladder dysfunction in the female Akita mouse model” 
  • Anissa Cervantes (Duke Medical Student) - 3rd place. Best presentation award andTravel Award. “Resolvin E1, a specialized pro-resolving mediator, has a transient beneficial effect on diabetes-associated bladder inflammation in a mouse model”
