Dr. Kaye Receives DIHI Award to Use AI to Improve Prior Authorizations

Deborah Kaye, MD, Assistant Professor of Urology, was recently awarded funding from the Duke Institute for Health Innovation (DIHI) for the project “Using AI to Reduce the Burden of Prior Authorizations.”

Dr. Kaye is working with Joanna Kipnes, MD, MS, Associate Chief Medical Officer and Medical Director of Utilization Management, Patient Revenue Management Office, on the project.

Prior authorizations pose a large administrative burden spanning all aspects of the health care system. In this project, they will use artificial intelligence (AI) to try to address the problem.

“Our goal is to develop an innovation that utilizes artificial intelligence to automate the retrieval of data and prepare a prior authorization request,” Dr. Kaye says. “We are starting this process for five high-impact (i.e., expensive) drugs with the plan to generalize to other drugs, procedures, and labs. The first drug on which we are working is Pluvicto.”
